Inter-Generational Programs (IT-LC)

What is IT-LC?

IT-LC is a volunteer program that partners volunteer seniors (Grandpersons) with a group of children in a school setting. The Grandpersons volunteer to teach their craft and hobby skills with the students.

Share skills and life experiences with students in grades 4 & 5 and 7 & 8. This program works in partnership with the Toronto District School Board to pair Grandpersons' (seniors aged 50 or older) with students to share conversation, teach hobbies and demonstrate the mastery of crafts such as photography, chess, wood working and knitting.

Known as the Intergenerational Teaching-Learning Communities Program (IT-LC), this unique program provides a renewed sense of purpose for seniors as the activities help the children learn new skills, increase self-esteem and experience intergenerational relationships.

This school program is offered in the spring and fall at 13 public schools throughout East York. We also offer after school and summer programs.

Program Information:
  • One afternoon a week for seven weeks at a local school.
  • Two to three sessions during the school year.
  • Volunteer Program Assistants provide direction and assistance.
  • All materials and patterns are provided.
  • Refreshments and social time at recess.

Benefits of the IT-LC Program

Older adults are able to contribute to their community by volunteering to share their experiences and skills with young children. The program gives them a sense of their continued need in their community and something to look forward to throughout the year.

The children have the opportunity to interact and share a special time with a "Grandperson" while learning a new skill or hobby, which they can continue to enjoy throughout their lifetime.

IT-LC is a wonderful experience of caring and sharing between generations.
